There are more than 4000 higher education institutions in the United States however some of them distinguish themselves from others. For instance, the Ivy League colleges have strong reputation not only in the US but also around the world. The quality of education offered at those schools are unique. Having professors with Nobel or Pulitzer prizes, working with millions of dollars research funds on cutting edge technologies are ordinary practices for those schools. In this blog, I would like to focus on one of the Ivy League colleges which has only %9 acceptance rate with 8.5 billion endowment. Dartmouth University is a private Ivy League research university located in Hanover, New Hampshire. It is the smallest of the eight Ivy League schools by undergraduate enrollment, with 6,572 undergraduate and graduate students as of 2021. Though it was established as an institution to educate Native Americans and settlers, Dartmouth later became a site for higher learning in America.

In 1769, Eleazar Wheelock established an Indian charity school on his family’s farm which eventually became known as Dartmouth College. In 1816 the state legislature chartered the school and appointed its first president; however, it wasn’t until 1819 when President John Wheelock opened its doors to students that it gained official recognition from outside sources like Harvard University (which had been founded years earlier).

Rankings

Dartmouth is a very prestigious school. It’s one of the top universities in the US, and it’s also one of the best schools for business and engineering in the world – sometimes even beating out MIT! According to US News and World Report, Dartmouth College’s ranking in the 2022 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities is 13.

Majors/Minors/Programs Offered

Dartmouth offers a wide range of academic programs and majors, in addition to minors and certificate programs. Undergraduate students can choose from approximately 50 different majors, while graduate students can pursue master’s degrees and doctorates in nearly 100 fields across liberal arts disciplines (including architecture), engineering, health sciences, management and business administration.

Dartmouth is home to 19 libraries with collections totaling more than 15 million books, journals and other printed materials; an extensive online catalog of these items; thousands of electronic resources including e-books; automated databases providing access to information on over 10 million articles.

Diversity

For the second year in a row, Dartmouth has made the College Diversity Honor Roll. This means that Dartmouth is doing an exceptional job of promoting diversity and inclusion on campus. Diversity is important because it helps us learn more about other cultures, ideas, and ways of thinking. It also gives students opportunities to work with people from different backgrounds who might have different perspectives than they do—and that’s a good thing! On the other hand, 15.9 % of Dartmouth’s students are international students coming from 45 different countries.

Academics

At Dartmouth, you’ll find a vibrant academic environment with a strong liberal arts focus and plenty of opportunities to study abroad. The school has been ranked the best small school in the country by U.S News & World Report for 11 years running, and students here have been recognized as Fulbright Scholars, Rhodes Scholars and Marshall Scholars.

The university’s strengths include STEM fields (the college was awarded $45 million from Intel to assist in developing high-performance computing), entrepreneurship (the Tuck School of Business is ranked 9th in entrepreneurship education) and international relations (Dartmouth offers more than 200 programs abroad).

In addition to its academic strengths, Dartmouth is well-known for its strong Greek life presence on campus; nearly one third of all undergraduates participate in Greek life while they’re studying at this New Hampshire institution!

Cost and Financial Aid

The undergraduate tuition for one year at Dartmouth is around $60.000. Although the cost of tuition is high, financial aid is widely available. The three main types of financial aid are based on need (you have to demonstrate that you can’t afford the full cost), merit (you have to show that you are an exceptional student), or a combination of both. With the fees and some other costs (e.g., books, room & board, supplies, etc.) the sticker price can go up to $80.000. However, the average net price after different scholarships is around $24.000 for Dartmouth students. The net price varies by family income and financial need.

Dartmouth offers several types of awards and scholarships including:

• Merit-based scholarships for undergrads who meet certain academic criteria, such as GPA and SAT/ACT scores;
• Need-based grants for students who demonstrate financial need in the application process;
• Athletic scholarships for athletes who excel at their sport

Research and Prestige

You will have the opportunity to conduct research with faculty mentors in the fields of your choice, including environmental science, mathematics and computer science. The university also provides an extensive program for undergraduate research, offering over 1,500 unpaid summer internships each year in labs across the world. Such academic opportunities are crucial if you plan on pursuing a career as a scientist or engineer. In 2020, total “Research and Development” expenditure at Dartmouth was around 326 million dollars.

No doubt that Dartmouth students are happy about their education with 97% freshmen retention rate.

Students at Dartmouth say that professors are friendly and approachable, classes are interesting and challenging, the workload is manageable, and extracurricular activities help you make friends. Further, the school’s location in New Hampshire’s White Mountains makes it a great place to hike or ski during off-hours (or on weekends).

Like other ivy schools, the school admission is very competitive. For instance, the SAT average of admitted students in 2021 at Dartmouth was 1500/1600. Like other ivy schools, this schools also expect more than test scores and high grade point average from high school. The real focus during admission process is about the impressive extra curricular activities done by the students during their high school years.
